Is the baby safe from Covid-19 during pregnancy?

The Covid-19 virus has made everyone fearful and anxious this year as the cases and deaths are increasing at an alarming rate. Pregnant women may be having a lot of questions about the virus which may affect them and their baby. However, answers to those questions are not clear yet as the virus is evolving at every phase. But, knowledge of similar respiratory illnesses can help to understand and handle viral infections during pregnancy.

What are the effects of Covid-19 virus on pregnant women?

Usually, pregnant women appear to be less risky than other healthier adults if they are infected by the virus. They will only have mild to moderate flu-like symptoms.

If one is pregnant and the flu-like symptoms are worsening, then it could mean that the chest infection is becoming more severe and they may require hospitalisation. If they have more severe symptoms and it is difficult to recover then it is necessary to rush to the nearby hospital.

The effect of coronavirus on the baby if the person is Covid positive

The covid-19 virus is a new one and studies on it are still in the process. This means that there is no possible evidence of miscarriage if the person has contracted the infection. Also, there isn’t any proof of vertical transmission which refers to the ability of the virus to pass to the unborn baby during pregnancy.

In China, a study was conducted in which nine pregnant women were tested Covid positive. However, all the nine babies were tested negative and were healthy. In London, one pregnant woman tested positive and her baby was also tested positive. Therefore, there is no clarity whether the baby contracted the infection in utero or right after birth. Experts are of the view that there are fewer chances of the baby to have any defects in development as a result. As of now, there is no evidence for the same.

Are pregnant women vulnerable to Covid-19?

It is unknown if pregnant women can be more infected by Covid-19 as compared to the normal population. However, it is always necessary for them to maintain social distancing. Pregnancy alters how the body fights some viral infections. Thus, pregnant women should be extra careful.

Is breastfeeding possible if one has suspected or confirmed Covid-19?

Yes, it is possible to breastfeed the baby. The befits of breastfeeding is more than the risk of transmission of the virus through breastmilk. The main risk lies in the close contact between the person and their baby which can pose a risk of droplet infection that can spread to the baby while breastfeeding. Below are some of the steps to minimise the risk of transmission:

  • Wash hands before  feeding or touching the baby, breast pump or bottles
  • Try to avoid coughing or sneezing while feeding
  • Wear a face mask while feeding, if available.
  • Follow instructions for cleaning and sterilising the breast pump properly
  • Consider asking one of the healthy family members to feed the baby if the person is expressing milk

Precautions for pregnant women to keep Covid-19 at bay

  • Wash hands frequently. Hand hygiene can protect one from exposure to COVID-19.
  • Follow social distancing. Always maintain a distance of at least 2 metres or 6 feet from others when in a public place. Avoid contact with others as much as possible.
  • Get vaccination on time. Even though the vaccine does not protect completely from exposure to COVID-19, it does make one less susceptible to it, which can cause complications during pregnancy.
  • Use a tissue during coughing or sneezing, throw the tissue in the dustbin. Wash hands right after.
  • Do not ignore any respiratory symptoms. If one develops a cough or any respiratory distress, they should not hesitate to call the doctor. After taking a detailed history, the doctor will decide if the person is needed to get tested for Covid-19.
  • Go virtual. As much as possible, consider virtual consultations instead of prenatal visits to the gynaecologist. Try to minimize or altogether avoid spending time in the doctors waiting room or the hospital. However, some tests will require the individual to be there in person such as the ultrasound, blood tests and fetal testing.
  • Stay safe. Symptoms such as high fever with or without continuous cough may indicate a possible coronavirus infection. Avoid coming in close contact with anyone showing these symptoms.

Besides, one should seek support from family and friends. One can also take up some hobby and keep themselves happy. Also, light exercises as advised by the doctor is recommended.
