Karnataka witnesses highest single-day spike with 50,112 new cases and 346 deaths

Bengaluru: On Wednesday, Karnataka witnessed the largest single-day spike with 50,112 new cases and 346 deaths. This has taken the total caseload to 17.5 lakh and the fatalities to 16,884.

The health department said that the previous highest numbers were on May 1 which had 48,296 cases and 292 deaths. Bengaluru urban alone reported 23,106 cases and 161 deaths. 26,841 people got discharged after recovery.

An aggregate of 17,41,046 positive cases have been confirmed in the state which is inclusive of 16,884 deaths and 12,36,854 discharges. There are 4,87,288 active cases.

On Wednesday, Tumakuru and Mysuru had 2,790 and 2,335 new cases respectively which made them the second major Covid hotspots in the state. Udupi had 1,655 cases, Mandya 1,621, Hassan 1,604, Dakshina Kannada 1,529, Bengaluru rural 1,033, Dharwad 1,030 and 1,009 in Chikkamagaluru.

Out of the 346 deaths, Ballari and Mandya reported 19 each, Uttara Kannada, Shivamogga and Kalaburagi had 15 each, Hassan 11 and Bidar and Dharwad had eight each.

Except for Kodagu, Koppal and Yadgir, other districts also reported deaths. 2.63 samples have been tested till now, out of which 1,55,224 were tested on Wednesday alone.

It is said that till now 86 people have been tested positive for the UK strain, six for the South African strain and 62 for the double mutant (B.1.617). One crore vaccinations which consist of the first and second doses have been done since the beginning of the vaccination drive on January 16.
