Karnataka reports another single-day spike with 39,047 Covid cases

Bengaluru: On Wednesday, Karnataka and Bengaluru witnessed another single-day spike in Covid-19 cases with 39,047 and 22,596 cases respectively.

The state had earlier witnessed the single-day spike on Sunday with 34,804 cases and its capital also had recorded the highest ever cases on the same day with 20,733 cases. The state’s daily positivity rate was 22.7%.

For the third time in five days, the state reported more than 200 deaths. It saw the highest number of deaths on Wednesday with 229 deaths out of which 137 were from Bengaluru. Twenty-five of the patients died at home and three were brought dead to the hospital.

The number of Covid patients in ICUs across the state touched 2,192, including 842 in Bengaluru, 354 in Kalaburagi, 159 in Tumakuru,  and 122 in Dharwad. Apart from Bengaluru Urban, Mysuru (1,759), Kolar (1,194), Tumakuru (1,174), Ballari (1,106), and Hassan (1,001) were the other districts which reported more than 1,000 cases.

Dr MK Sudarshan, chairperson, Covid technical advisory committee said, “The positive cases seen on Wednesday would be of the samples collected between last Saturday and Monday.”

He says that the real impact of lockdown will be evident from the next week. He said, “We can hope for early effects of the shutdown from Wednesday onwards.”

Amid the rising cases, the vaccination process continued across the state. Of 6,119 vaccination sessions planned, only 344 were held. Many senior citizens who waited for their second dose had to go from the hospitals where they had taken their first dose. A senior citizen said, “We wanted to step out only if the vaccine was available. But in a hospital near JP Nagar, there is no stock of the first dose.”

A family of four members, all of whom were above 45 years of age frantically searched for the first dose of vaccine on Wednesday as they could not get it earlier due to the ill health of one of them. A 49-year-old IT professional from Nagarabhavi said, “It has become a worry as the doctors had earlier suggested my mother to about vaccination till she recovers from a surgery she had undergone. We postponed our vaccination too. Now, we hear of shortage everywhere.”
