First case of ‘Green Fungus’ reported in Madhya Pradesh

Bengaluru: A survivor of Covid-19 in Madhya Pradesh is infected with Green fungus. Doctors said that it is possibly the first case of green fungus in the country.

Dr Ravi Dosi, the head of the Department of Chest Diseases at Sri Aurobindo Institute of Medical Sciences (SAIMS) in Indore said that this newest disease is an Aspergillosis infection and more research was needed on it. It is an uncommon disease that affects the lungs.

The 34-year-old patient who survived Covid-19 was said to have contracted black fungus or mucormycosis. But, after tests, it was found out that he has contracted green fungus which had earlier been seen as a “junior partner” in other cases.

Dr Dosi stated that this fungus is affecting the patient’s lungs, sinuses and blood.

He said, “The patient underwent Covid treatment for around two months. He went home and around 10-15 days started experiencing nosebleeds and fever. He came in for tests and we found that he is infected with ‘Green Fungus.”

He also said that the medicine needed for the treatment of green fungus is different from that of black fungus. Also, colour coding of these viruses should be done.

Dr Guleri, AIIMS Delhi chief has said last month not to create confusion by giving different colours to the fungal infection as the first case of “yellow fungus” was reported in the country.

He said, “Naming the same fungus based on its colours, depending on the area of infection, creates confusion.”

The black fungus which was the first of the coloured infection to be reported is rare but is fatal and has been declared an epidemic.
