CBSE cancels class 10 board exams, postpones class 12 exams

Bengaluru: As the Covid cases are rising sharply, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), on Wednesday, has cancelled the year-end board exams for classes X.

The board exams were to be held from May 4 to June 14. But now, the results will be prepared on the basis of an objective criterion which is to be developed by the board.

CBSE class 12 board exams have been postponed. The authorities will review the situation after June 1 for holding the exams. A notice will be given to the students 15 days before the exams start. The board exams of class 12 were scheduled between May 4 and June 14.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting with Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal and other senior officials about the issue of holding these examinations as the parents and students were demanding to cancel them in view of the Covid surge.

“Today Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji chaired a high-level meeting to review the examinations to be held at various levels in view of the developing Corona situation. The board exams for class Xth to be held from 4th May to 14th June 2021 are hereby cancelled. The results of class Xth board will be prepared on the basis of an objective criterion to be developed by the Board”, Pokhriyal tweeted.

If in case, any candidate is not satisfied with his or her marks on this basis will be permitted to give the exam when the situation is favourable, Pokhriyal stated.

The board exams were held from the month of February-March and the results would be declared by the month of May every year. But this year, the academic session began late and the classes were held online.

Opposition leaders such as Arvind Kejriwal and Rahul Gandhi had been urging the Centre to postpone the exams. Parents, child rights bodies, several state governments also appealed to reconsider the decision of holding offline exams next month.

More than 21 lakh students were supposed to appear in Class X board exams and 14 lakh students were to take the Class XII exams.

The Education Ministry had announced on December 31 that the examination results of class X and class XII would be declared by July 15, 2021.
