Bengaluru: The migrant workers from Bengaluru began exodus as soon as a statewide lockdown for 14 days was announced by Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa.
A huge flock of migrant workers and students bustled the Majestic bus terminus in the evening, to reach their hometowns and villages before the lockdown is kicked in on Tuesday. KSRTC officials operated 500 extra buses in view of the surge in passenger numbers.
A huge spurt of passengers was witnessed in buses heading towards destinations such as Bidar, Kalaburagi and Raichur by around 4 pm. There was also vying of seats on buses to Andhra Pradesh.
Students, especially those who had come to give law exams and other classes, started making desperate attempts to leave the capital city with only 36 hours before the lockdown would be effective which would lead to shutting down of all services, that included grounding of buses to restrict movement of people, in an attempt to curb the Covid surge.
Transport officials said they are expecting even larger crowds to board outbound buses at city terminals on Tuesday.
