The Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru welcomes the country’s first dedicated Express Cargo Terminal on March 19, 2021. The terminal was created specifically for the export and import of foreign couriers.
Cargo operations at Bengaluru Airport are expected to grow and improve with the opening of the new Express Cargo Terminal. According to an IE report, the Express cargo terminal at the 200,000 square foot built-to-suit facility, developed by Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), will house leading global express courier companies including DHL Express and FedEx Express.
The Express Industry Council of India (EICI) will run the Common-User Express Terminal for other courier companies, according to BIAL. The Common-user Terminal would also boost the city’s already large e-commerce base. Customs offices will have their own dedicated space in the terminal, with easy access to both Landside and Airside.
Bengaluru Airport will be able to handle 150,000 Metric Tonnes (MT) of cargo annually, raising the airport’s total annual cargo capacity to 720,000 MT from the current 570,000 MT.
This is a first-of-its-kind warehousing facility at an Indian airport that was planned and built-to-suit, allowing operators with optimized operational workflows to expand in the future. The automated truck docks would allow for faster freight acceptance and delivery.
The terminal, which includes dedicated space for each operator, is expected to boost throughput and meet the demands of the growing industry. It will promote trade and enable products to move more quickly around the world.
As we all know, the Bengaluru airport is strategically situated and serves as a major cross-border international trade hub in southern India. BIAL’s development of India’s first dedicated Express Cargo Terminal has given the express industry a big boost, allowing it to continue rising and reaching new heights.
