Somewhere around the ninth century, Sri Gavi Gangadhareshwara Temple was cut out of a rock. Kempe Gowda, the founder of Bangalore, later renovated it.
This temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is situated in Gavipuram-Guttahalli, approximately 3 km from the City Market. The Bangalore Temple of Shri Gavi Gangadhareswara houses a rare image of Agni, the God of Fire, possibly the only one of its kind in all of South India. A splendid image of Shakti Ganapathi, with 12 hands, is on the left side of the main entrance. In the courtyard, there are four monolith pillars that represent Damaru, Thrishula, and two fans.
The Sri Gavi Gangadhareswara Temple in Bangalore, a natural monolith rock formation, is visited every year in the month of January by thousands of devotees. On the holy day of Makar Sankranti, they come to Bangalore to encounter a rare phenomenon. On this day, for an hour, after passing through the two horns of the image of Nandi Bull, the vehicle of Lord Shiva, sun rays fall on Shiva Linga. It was purposely designed by the architects of Sri Gavi Gangadhareshwara Temple in such a way that the sun’s rays always pass through Nandi’s horns on Makar Sankranti, thus lighting up the Shiva Lingam. This unique occurrence can only be observed for one hour, that is, on this particular day, between 17.00 and 18.00 hrs.
It is one of the ancient temples in Bangalore. The temple is small but an excellent place to visit.
