According to legend, demon King Ravana was returning to Lanka with Lord Shiva’s Atma Lingam on the condition that it be held on the ground only in Lanka. But, with the aid of Lord Vishnu, Lord Ganesha deceived Ravana, and the Atma lingam was placed on the earth.

Ravana was enraged, and he used all of his power to raise the lingam from the ground, scattering some pieces in the process. As a result, Aatmalingam was placed in Gokarna. It is now worshipped as Mahabaleshwara. The Atma lingam’s cloth dropped on the Kanduka hill, which is now known as Murdeshwara.

Murudeshwara is accessible by bus. A small railway station is also located in Murudeshwara. There are a few trains that run between Mumbai and Mangalore that stop here. There is no set time for visitors to come to this temple. You can go to the temple at any time of the year.
