KR market is the biggest wholesale market dealing with commodities in Bangalore, K R Market (Krishna Rajendra Market), also known as City Market. It is named after the former ruler of the princely state of Mysore, Krishnarajendra Wodeyar. The KR market is located on Mysore Road at its junction with Krishnarajendra Road, in Kalasipalyam, adjacent to Tipu Sultan’s Summer Palace.
In 1928, K R Market was established. The site of the market during the Anglo-Mysore Wars is said to have been a water tank and then a battlefield in the 18th century. Two buildings remain from the British period, at the front and back of the marketplace.
One of the oldest in the area, the KR Market is comprised of countless stalls and street vendors, hawking everything from jasmine strings to dumbbells. It is claimed that the flower market is one of the largest in Asia. As it is better known, Krishnarajendra Wodeyar Market, or KR Market, one of the city’s busiest places, is ideal for a morning of exploration, selfies, and grocery runs. It is assumed that before K R Market was turned into a marketplace, the KR Market area was once a water tank and then a battlefield.
Flower vendors are running over the KR market area around the bus stand, from near and far, as early as 4 am. Crop sellers displaying everything from budding orchids to endless strings of fragrant jasmine lined the streets and bylanes. Roses of every color, carnations, and local blooms may also be picked up. Needless to say, the flower market is popular with images of the cities.
The KR market is famous for fresh veggies and several times you can buy directly from a local farmer. Plus, rates are a quarter of what you’ll spend at the near-home store.
