Hesaraghatta Lake

Sitting across the Arkavathy River in the northwest of Bangalore City is this man-made freshwater lake. Hesaraghatta lake, spread over an area of over 1000 acres, is one of the city’s main suppliers of freshwater.

Some of the frequently found bird species are the Flowerpecker, Brahminy Kite, Mayna, Paddy Field Pipit, Pond Heron, Kingfisher, Magpie Robin, Bushlarks, Cormorants, Black Drongo, Brahminy Kite Juvenile, Black Kites, Egret, Black Crow, Pale Billed, etc.

The cyclists in the city who always take a break at Nrityagram and then travel on to enter Hesaraghatta Lake love the 35 KM long stretch of a cycling path. At a distance of 21 KMS from Bangalore City Railway Station. Since 1896, the lake, constructed across the Arkavathy River, has been the source of drinking water for Bangalore City. The lake was designed by Mysore MC Hutchins, then chief engineer, and Dewan Sir K Seshadri, with a mission to supply the city with drinking water.

The site is also noted for poultry, animal husbandry, agricultural and horticultural research, and production farms. In and around the lake periphery, birds such as kingfisher, magpie robin, small egrets, common mynas, Brahminy kites, black dragons, bulbuls, larger coucals, purple sunbirds, etc. have been recorded.

Paddling and motorboats from the coast might be accessible for people planning to visit the lake. Birders can also watch a plethora of birds in addition to boating and can catch them on their camera lenses.
