Ghati Subramanya Temple

Lord Subramanya and Lord Lakshmi Narasimha are worshipped in the Ghati Subramanya temple. Lord Subramanya is Shiva and Parvati’s elder son. Subramanya is regarded to be the Lord of Snakes. The idol of Shri Subramanya is believed to be self-originated. The beauty of the temple is that Sri Subramanya faces east and a single idol faces Sri Lakshmi Narasimha west. Through a strategically positioned mirror, devotees can view Laxmi Narasimha.

According to legend, Ghati is the place where, before going to destroy the demon Tharakasura, Lord Subramanya performed penance in the guise of a serpent inside the caves in the mountain ranges of this region. Ghati is also the place where Lord Subramanya invoked the protection of the serpentine clan from Garuda’s fear of Lord Lakshmi Narasimha.

Ghati Subramanya has more than 600 years of recorded history. It is an ancient temple built in the style of Dravidianism. For those who seek the Lord to bless them with a child, the temple is especially special. It is also a major center for snake worship in South India. Here, an interesting ritual is the installation of snake idols. Near the temple, one can see thousands of them. People flock here in the thousands, and Sri Subramanya is especially popular with the Karnataka Tamil community.

One of the most distinctive features, a perfect example of Dravidian architecture, is the tall pyramid-shaped gateway tower of the temple. It is decorated with sculptures of various Hindu mythological deities and events.

As this day is believed to be the birthday of Lord Subramanya, the Pushya Suddha Shasti is one of the largest festivals in this temple. Narasimha Jayanthi is the other main festival at the temple. Skanda Shasti, Panghuni Uttiram, the Lord’s wedding anniversary, and Vaikashi Vishakam are also celebrated here with a lot of fanfare. Free lunch for the devotees is offered daily.

Bangalore International Airport, which is 48 kilometers away, is the nearest airport to the temple. The most comfortable route would be the NH648 from the airport and the travel time would be a little more than an hour. Bangalore City, 60 kilometers away, is the closest railway station. To enter the temple, one has to cross the Bellary Road from the City Railway station, a journey of about 90 minutes to 2 hours. The city’s main road that links Ghati Subramanya temple to the urban areas around it is the Bellary Road. The distance to the temple from the center of Bangalore is about 61 kilometers. There are buses that pass through Doddaballapura if one travels by bus.
