Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary; The Cauvery River passes through its midst

The Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary, situated in southern Karnataka, is just about 231 kilometers from Bengaluru, the state capital. The Cauvery River, which flows through the tranquil landscape, gives the sanctuary its name. This sanctuary, which spans a thousand square kilometers, is home to some of India’s endemic and endangered wild flora and fauna.

The Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary, with a contiguous wildlife habitat area of 1027 km, is spread across three Karnataka districts: Ramnagar (Kanakapura), Chamrajnagar (Kollegala), and Mandya (Malavalli). Bheemeshwari Nature Camp (part of Jungle Lodges and Resorts), Hogenekkal Falls, Mekedatu (Goats Leap), Sangam, and the Gopinatham Mystery Trails are all ecotourism zones in this area.

The sanctuary is an idyllic getaway where anglers and nature lovers can get a whiff of raw adventure and a glimpse of the majestic Cauvery as it bounces over jagged rocks, tucked away amidst mountains, valleys, a mighty river, jungle sounds, and lush greenery.

You can ascend to the peak of the hill for a panoramic view of the Cauvery River as it passes through the beautiful valley below. You can also visit the ruins of the majestic sculpted Shiva temple, which was once a place of worship for the local Soliga tribes, raft down the Cauvery’s rapids, or go fishing/angling for the endangered Masheer, which you can angle, photograph, and then release back into the wild. Apart from Asian Elephants, tiger, leopard, wild dog, striped hyena, sloth bear, gaur, sambar, chital, and four-horned antelope can be seen.
