Even though peacocks are our national bird, seeing one of these majestic creatures is difficult, particularly in today’s world of urbanization. However, in our most recent exploration, we came across a peacock sanctuary. Yeah, we’re referring to the lesser-known Bankapura Peacock Sanctuary, which is located six hours outside of Bangalore.
The beauty and serenity of this sanctuary, which covers 52 acres, has yet to be corrupted by human activity. Surprisingly, the sanctuary is concealed inside Bankapura Fort and is largely unknown. When you walk through this sanctuary, you will be surrounded by a flock of peacocks. It is giving you the feeling that you have traveled back in time to when these majestic birds roamed the courtyards of palaces. And, if you’re lucky, you could even get to see and photograph the peacocks’ royal dance while you’re there. So, don’t forget to bring your DSLRs with you.
The Mayur Van of Bankapura Fort is a popular destination for birdwatchers and ornithologists who want to see this beautiful bird in its natural habitat. According to official reports, the site is home to over 1,000 peahens and peacocks. The region is well-kept, and the authorities have gone to great lengths to ensure that the peacocks have a safe haven. Acts to protect the bird and promote breeding are regularly passed, and the Department of Veterinary Studies performs experiments and studies here on a regular basis. You can see Indian Robins, Nightjars, Parakeets, Winged Kites, Gray Hornbills, and other birds here in addition to peacocks.
