Peacocks, which are part of the pheasant tribe, are India’s national pride. Adichunchanagiri Peacock Sanctuary is one of the many steps being taken to protect these shy but flamboyant birds, and it is the one that shelters many of them and does so with utmost care. Adichunchanagiri was declared a sanctuary on October 21, 1981, in the Nagamangala Taluk of Karnataka’s Mandya district, due to a large population of peafowls. The historical adherence to strict norms for the safety of these animals, which can be attributed to Adichunchanagiri Swamiji and his disciples’ teachings and sentiment, was one of the most striking features of the site.
