The Tabebuia Rosea at Marathahalli Outer Ring Road had never been a part of the Bangalore skyline. Rain trees with their pink powder-puff flowers, Jacarandas, Gulmohurs, and Champas were more common.
Tabebuia trees have been imported from continental America in a variety of colors over the last decade. And, the trees seem to be thriving across streets, planted in the city’s newer layouts. Between December and March, this fast-growing tree can reach a height of 25 to 30 meters and bloom with panicles of delicate pink trumpet-shaped flowers with yellow throats.
In early Spring, which in Bangalore is from March to May, the Tabibuea Rosea flowers on graceful, wide-spreading branches during a brief deciduous season.
It is a fast-growing tree that can reach a height of 30 feet in the first three years of existence and has a 50-year average lifespan. Following flowering, seedpods appear, measuring nearly 6 inches in length. The feathery seeds are scattered all over the field underneath the tree as the seedpods ripen over the course of the year.
