Bengaluru: Amid the grim situation of the state, around 1 lakh Covid-19 patients have recovered from May 1 to 9 in Bengaluru.
The recovery rate is gradually improving after it fell last month after an unprecedented spike in the number of cases. According to the state data, 33,000 people have recovered from Covid in the last 3 days.
A senior health department official said, “Not everyone testing positive is on deathbed. Many are fighting it and emerging victorious. We appeal to the people to shun fear and stay mentally strong by following health protocols, including wearing masks, sanitising hands and maintaining distance.”
Bengaluru witnessed over 5.3 lakh cases between April 1 and May 9. 1.8 lakh people have recovered out of these. The present active cases are 3.5 lakh and over 3,009 deaths have been reported.
City’s positive cases like to touch 10 lakh mark in the coming days
The second wave of the pandemic being sudden has made Bengaluru the second-worst hit city, following Delhi. The city’s total positive cases will soon touch the 10 lakh mark. An independent data tracker said, “The city’s recovery rate, which was a whopping 98% in the first week of March, has plunged to around 62% now. Even as positive cases are increasing, the number of daily discharges (of recovered patients) is also on the rise. In the coming days, it will outclass the number of active cases.”
BBMP has initiated measures to ensure the recovery of more patients. Gaurav Gupta said, “This is a pandemic and we are doing our best to ensure the system responds to the people in need of medical help, especially oxygen. We have added 620 oxygen beds in the past five days. We’ll add 2,000 beds in the next week.”
He stated that now the focus is to prevent death by improving the oxygen-related infrastructure. He added that BBMP had operationalised more than 10 oxygen stabilisation centres.
Gupta has acknowledged the gaps in Covid testing and 4 days of delay in the results. He said that it has been decided to reduce reckless testing and make sure that the laboratories give results within 24 hours.
He added that follow-up calls are made to check on the recovery of Covid patients as BBMP wants to ensure timely treatment and speedy recovery.
Public health experts are of the view that the number rod patients getting discharged after discovery is increasing despite the surge in daily cases since patients who don’t need critical care are advised to go home and stay in isolation.
