Bangalore: Street food lovers in Bengaluru, beware! A pani puri vendor near Navarang Theatre was recently apprehended for allegedly using rotten potatoes, onions, and unsafe borewell water in his pani puri recipe. The incident, which raises serious concerns about food safety, serves as a stark reminder for citizens to be cautious when indulging in street food.
Alert Customers Raise the Alarm
The vendor, identified as Pavan Kumar, had been operating his pushcart for three years. His practices came to light thanks to the vigilance of Keshav, an autorickshaw driver. Keshav reportedly witnessed Kumar fetching water from a borewell tank on September 29th. When questioned, Kumar initially claimed the water was for washing plates. However, Keshav, suspicious of Kumar’s response, followed him along with his friend Vijay Kumar to the vendor’s cart. There, they allegedly witnessed Kumar blatantly using the borewell water to prepare the pani.
Unhygienic Practices Exposed
Further inspection by Keshav and Vijay revealed a disturbing scene. Rotten potatoes, reportedly numbering around 40, were found boiled and kept in a covered container. The onions meant for stuffing were also in a state of decay. To make matters worse, Kumar allegedly used uncleaned coriander leaves in the pani.
Action Taken
Based on their observations, Keshav filed a complaint against Kumar. The vendor was arrested and later released on bail with a warning.
A Call for Vigilance
This incident highlights the importance of food safety, especially when it comes to street vendors. Citizens are advised to be cautious and choose vendors who maintain clean and hygienic practices. Look for vendors who use fresh ingredients, clean water, and proper storage methods. If you witness any suspicious practices, report them to the authorities immediately.
Stay Safe, Enjoy Responsibly
Bangalore boasts a vibrant street food scene. However, it’s crucial to prioritize hygiene to avoid health risks. By being vigilant and choosing responsible vendors, you can continue to enjoy your favorite street food treats with minimal risk.
