Bengaluru: As the black fungus is creating havoc among the people, experts have warned over the discovery of a white fungal infection.
It is considered to be deadlier than black fungus and according to the reports, at least four cases related to the infection have been found in Patna, Bihar and many more may be undiagnosed at this stage.
Till now it is known that the white fungus infection can be more complicated in nature. It can cause many symptoms and it may only be traced by conducting an HRCT-like chest scan.
What is white fungus? How can it infect a person?
White, as well as black fungus infection, are caused by fungi moulds which are called ‘mucormycetes’ present in the environment. The disease is not contagious, but the person is said to catch this infection as he/she can easily inhale these moulds. It can spread to vital organs and cause complications.
Who is at risk? What is the cause of the infection?
Like other infections, white fungus infection causes damage to those who have low immunity. Therefore, an individual with low immunity, having other comorbidities or using immuno-suppressant medications has a greater risk of getting the infection.
Unlike black fungus infection, this time women and children are likely to face risks of infection.
Doctors say that just like black fungus, the white fungus can spread when a person comes in contact with unclean surfaces. It may also be a source of transmissions when a patient meeds prolonged oxygen support where water sources could be contaminated. This is the reason why there is a rise in white fungus cases amongst hospitalised Covid patients. For instance, using unfiltered/tap water in humidifiers/oxygen cylinders can make patients vulnerable to the white fungus symptoms. Thus, special care and attention should be given to sanitation and hygiene now.
The symptoms of white fungus
The majority of the people who were detected with white fungus showed respiratory symptoms similar to that in Covid, but when tested, they were negative. Experts are of the view that X-ray or chest scans can accurately predict the severity of the disease and how it may affect the vital organs.
In some cases, the symptoms of white fungus can be similar to that of black fungus. But, those suffering from severe infection can have complications if it spreads to the lungs.
Respiratory complications can occur
Even though there is not much information on the same, most doctors opine that white fungus can affect the chest and the lungs. Therefore, a person can experience symptoms like cough, chest pain and breathlessness.
Besides, it can also cause other symptoms like swelling, infections, persistent headaches and pains. Also, people who are recovering from Covid-19 can have the risk of complications due to underlying conditions and therapies.
How is white fungus treated?
According to the reports, most patients with the white fungus infection are given anti-fungal medication and they are recovering well. Therefore, the only option now is to give anti-fungal medicines. But, early detection of the case is necessary as there is a shortage of medications.
