The government announced on Thursday that Bengaluru, along with 6 cities in the state would enforce night curfew from 10 pm to 5 am starting this Saturday. This was decided few minutes after the PM Narendra Modi requested states to announce fresh burns to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
The chief minister, Yediyurappa announced that the curfew which will be till April 20, will also be imposed in Mysuru, Mangaluru, Kalaburgi, Bidar, Tumakuru and Udupi-Manipal. However, essential services will be continued.
Karnataka is one of the ten states that has shown an increase in the number of Covid-19 cases. The state has recorded 84.21 per cent of the 1.26 lakh new infections registered on Thursday, according to the health ministry.
The state has been witnessing a sudden surge in cases over the last month out of which Bengaluru records most of the new numbers. For the past days, the city has registered 4,000 cases everyday. Active cases in Karnataka have now crossed 50,000. More than 50,000 Covid vaccine shots have been administered so far.
India’s Covid-19 cases have increased 13-fold in hardly two months. This is said to be the second wave caused by the disregard for safety protocols across the nation.
Election rallies by various ministers, crowded festivals and religious gatherings have played a major role in the increase in the cases.
After putting an end to the surge late last year, leaders have been allowing or even encouraging dangerous behaviour because they underestimated the virus and reopened the economic too fast and too broadly.
Mumbai reopened its huge suburban train network and authorities allowed thousands of people to enter the stadiums to witness international cricket matches only few days after Union Health Minister, Harsh Vardhan announced india’s Covid-19 contained in late January.
Many people of the country ignored wearing the masks and various politicians organised election rallies in which thousands of mostly mask-less supporters participated.
As India has recorded 1.29 crore cases, it remains close behind Brazil and below United States, which has recorded more than 3 crore infections. The Covid-19 deaths in India are above 1.66 lakh. But, its fatality rate is one of the lowest in the world, partly because of its relatively young population.
